Partial prostheses are prostheses that assume the presence of an undamaged and mobile stapes. Total prostheses are used when only an intact and mobile stapes footplate is available. The prostheses are inserted under slight tension between the stapes capitulum or footplate and a thin slice of cartilage or other transplant material for tympanic membrane protection. In both cases, the manubrium of malleus can serve as a buttress.

KURZ® partial prostheses have a unique feature compared to conventional prostheses (mostly hollow shaft prostheses): they imitate the natural contact of the incus-stapes joint. A precisely fitted, anatomically shaped bell transmits the sound directly to the stapedial joint surface instead of to the stapedial pedicle. This advantageous shape gave the BELL prosthesis its name.

The bell ensures secure placement onto the stapedial capitulum; slippage is unlikely. The notches inscribed in the bell are unique: they provide enough space for the stapedial tendon, and enable modification of the bell diameter or even placement of the prosthesis onto the stapedial arch, in case of a missing stapedial capitulum. In addition the CliP® prostheses, with their tensile clip, provide for a secure fixed and standardized coupling to the stapes.

KURZ® partial prostheses compared with conventional hollow shaft prostheses have one more decisive advantage. Their design allows for shortest prostheses lengths which are needed in many situations. All partial prostheses start with a Functional Length (FL) of only 0.75 mm.

KURZ® total prostheses are unusually delicate in design and allow the surgeon to perform the implantation under very confined anatomical conditions, such as those often encountered in the recess of the oval window. The long, very slender shaft has similarity to an antenna; hence the name AERIAL for the total prosthesis.

Because of the manufactured purity and shape the KURZ® pure titanium permits intraoperative adaptation of the prosthesis by simple bending, a feature that saves time, keeps things simple and serves individual anatomical situations.
